JANESVILLE—Lions Beach, 1401 Palmer Drive, is closed until further notice due to elevated bacteria levels found in the swimming area, according to a city news release.

The city recreation division's weekly water sample results were more than 1,000 ppm of bacteria, requiring the swimming area to be closed because of water quality standards.

The recent sample was taken when water was warm, which could make results uncertain. Recreation division staff will re-sample “properly-iced” water today, according to the release.

If the new sample is approved by the state hygiene lab in Madison, the beach with be reopened.

Weekly water samples are taken to monitor E. coli bacteria. All previous water results at the beach from 2014 have been safe for swimming.
