What's going on: The city of Janesville is installing sewer, water and the start of a road at its 220-acre lot of “shove-ready” parcels in the south side business park.

The vacant land is at the southwest corner of Highway 11 and County G.

The first 2,500 feet of a new road—Innovation Drive—is being built on the west side of County G, and it will be the north leg of what eventually will be a loop, said Jay Winzenz, director of administrative services for the city.

The project should be done by fall.

Why: The city is marketing the property as “shovel-ready” for development, Winzenz said.

“But I think that it's been difficult to show these sites to potential businesses because there hasn't been a road going back into this area,” he said. “It's difficult sometimes to really say they're shovel-ready when the utilities aren't in front of the potential sites.”

If a business comes to town looking for a site that's the size available, officials are able to show the business the utilities and road and that “it really is ready to go,” he said.

“They don't have to wait for us to get those in place,” he said. “It was really being more proactive.”

Cost: Rock Road was the low bidder for the project at $1,357,712. The bid includes water main, storm sewer, road construction, street lights, curb, gutter and restoration, Winzenz said.
