Your Views: Why doesn't symphony play only our music to celebrate nation’s birthday?

Once again, it’s time for the Concert in the Park, on or about the Fourth of July, when we celebrate our country’s birthday. Much enjoyed and appreciated, but not the time to once again have the “1812 Overture” as its centerpiece.

While it is a fine piece of music, it is not our music. I don’t think we have to hear Russian music on our birthday, when ample excellent American music is available. Last year’s addition of the theme from the “Band of Brothers” miniseries was an excellent addition to the program. Any number of the selections from the “Victory at Sea” collection would work, i.e. “Guadalcanal March,” etc. Let’s end the concert with “The Stars and Stripes Forever.”
