Your Views: Court ruling on same-sex marrige favors pursuit of happiness for all
I’m replying to the June 19 letter from T-J Mohr of Brodhead on his disappointment on the gay-marriage provision reversal of our state constitution, (a reversal still in process).
Remember when marriage between races, i.e. black and white, was banned by some of our southern states’ constitutions? The voices of the people were thrown out, deemed unconstitutional by the Supreme Court, a court of judges, appointed by our elected officials and part of our democratic system of checks and balances. The people's views were wrong then, and they are still wrong now, not because of the moral issue but because of the restriction-of-freedom issue.
Sometimes good people make bad decisions. They are checked by our system of government—not always the way you or I would like these decisions to go but, nonetheless, of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all, not just for you and me.
