Your Views: Republicans quick to jump to conclusions on Bergdahl
Wow! Just as Benghazi fizzled out, President Obama handed the GOP warbirds another cause to bear. As soon as a captive American soldier was released, the GOP war leaders were hand-springing for joy that we left no one on the battlefield—until they found out the price: five unindicted, untried and unconvicted Taliban leaders who had been detained in Guantanamo.
The swap, a rather common occurrence in wartime, was celebrated by the GOP (we leave no soldier behind) before it became “Benghazi,” possibly the next cause for Rep. Darrell Issa to hold a “hearing.”
Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl is being convicted by the media and public first, before trial, due to rumors of military malfeasance. The GOP and its media cohorts find it convenient to spread the rumors as virtual truth until the story becomes a loop in the daily cable broadcasts. Shall we declare him guilty as a deserter or wait until the facts are known? Regardless of what we think, he will most likely be tried by a military court after all of the umbrage slows.
If the GOP finds it inconvenient to swap detainees for hostages or captives, possibly next time we should arrange to substitute five congressional representatives (your choice).
