Your Views: Wisconsin's state government serving only the rich
We have a tea party governor and Legislature bought and paid for by the Koch brothers and other out-of-state millionaires. These politicians have little concern for the middle classes and the poor. They pass laws that make the rich even wealthier. Many citizens feel alienated and that their government does not care about them.
Tea party politicians demonize public schools, working-class people, minorities and the environment. They pass laws cutting funding for women seeking cancer screenings, birth control and health examinations. Our governor has signed a law repealing equal pay protection for women, even though he knows that for every dollar a man makes, a woman makes only 77 cents.
Our governor wants the government to stay out of people’s private lives, and yet he signs laws telling women how they should handle their reproductive and health issues. Do we have a governor who respects the rights of women?
A disturbing aspect of the tea party is that one of its role models is atheist Ayn Rand, who in her books emphasizes selfishness and greed. She has no sympathy for people who are struggling and need help.
In summary, the impression is that our governor and tea party legislators are taking their marching orders from the very wealthy and the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). Do we really want a government of, by and for only the very wealthy?
