LAKE GENEVA--Staring this spring, bridges on U.S. Highway 12 over Wisconsin Highway 50 in Lake Geneva will be replaced.

According to a Wisconsin Department of Transportation report, the interchange between Lake Geneva and Elkhorn was built with concrete pavement in the 1960s and has had resurfacing done multiple times, but the asphalt overlay is deteriorating.

Construction will replace the aging bridges and provide proper vertical clearance for oversized trucks.

Entrance and exit ramps will be reconstructed and lengthened, and the guardrail will be replaced.

The project will also add a multi-use bike and pedestrian trail on Wisconsin 50 under U.S. 12.

Both U.S. 12 and Wisconsin 50 will remain open during the project but traffic will be reduced to a single lane in each direction during bridge reconstruction.

The project will be in stages with the U.S. 12 westbound off ramp to be closed during stage three. This traffic will be detoured to the U.S. 12 and Wisconsin 120 interchange, directed back onto U.S. 12 eastbound and exiting at the Wisconsin 50 off ramp.

Construction is expected to be completed this fall.
